We're trying to be Green!
So what are we doing? In May 2007, we formulated our Environmental Policy, but policies are nothing without action. We found that our general business activities have a very limited effect, our office and warehouse are fitted with energy saving lighting, and we only heat our office area when we have to! However, we did conclude that our main impact is transporting our equipment to events, and use of the equipment. Since then we have re-written our quote system to calculate the kilowatt hours required by our equipment on each event. We have then used this figure to calculate the carbon footprint using DEFRAs 1999 study on power generation in the UK. We also calculate transport cost by the number of litres of diesel used by Vans and Trucks, plus any job-associated staff car miles. By doing this we are able to inform customers of the possible environmental impact of their event, which we then carbon of-set by planting new trees with GROWAFOREST.com. But this isn't enough! By informing clients at the quotation stage, we hope that it will inspire them to consider the total impact the event will have, including how guests/delegates travel to the event, the implications of their menu choice and the food miles involved.
Life (and events) will continue, but unless we do take our environment seriously very soon, we will find a massive social and financial impact on all our lives.
